Taiwan, a beautiful island also called Formosa, is well known as one of the most liberal and prosperous country in Asia. However, seldom people know that Taiwan had struggled to reach its nowadays outstanding achievement. Taiwan, located between mainland china and Pacific Ocean, was first populated by Austronesian peoples in the Stone Age. It was colonised by the Dutch in the 17th century, while influxes of Han people from the mainland. Later on, it has undergone the rule of Koxinga, a Ming dynasty general, and was substituted for Ching dynasty in 1683. After the first Sino- Japanese War, The island was ceded to Japan , and went through a 50-year-long colonization. Finally, after Japanese was defeated in the World War ¢º.Taiwan was returned to the Republic of China( R.O.C) in October 1945, governed by Chinese Nationalist Party (Kuomintang).
Result from discontent with the corruption of Kuomintang(KMT) and misunerstanding between local taiwanese and new-coming mainlander, the February 28th incident brokeout in 1947. What¡¦s worse, the following ¡§white terror¡¨ sacrificed nearly 30000 Taiwanese under a terrible massacre by mainland military force. It was not untill the KMT leader from Chaing Kai-Sheks to his successor, Chiang Chin-kauo, that Taiwan began to liberal its political systems. Another extremely important page of Taiwan history is KMT¡¦s losing the Chinese Civil War in 1949 , the government of R.O.C moved its capital from Nanjing in China to Taipei in Taiwan.In other words, the war result in forming a new authorities called People¡¦s Republic of China (P.R.C) under rule of the Chinese Communist Party whitch is totally alien from R.O.C in Taiwan ruled by Chinese Nationalist Party.
The controversy over the political status of Taiwan confused many foreigners, wondering if the island is an ¡§inaleinable part of China¡¨ as what China claimed recently. No one is able to answer this complicated historical controversy, however, most Taiwanese understand that Taiwan is one hundred percent a independent contry in practical that is completely away from P.R.C. Although Taiwan has been hectored diplomatically, denied access to most of the internatonal organizations (such as the UN) by the P.R.C government, threatened by the possibility of P.R.C¡¦s will to unite Tiawan by force, we never give up our democratic reforms and econamic developments in the past, right now, or in the future.

Since the beginning of our registration on January 1st, many have completed their registration procedure. However we have received quite a few questions regarding visas, and especially landing visas. Here I would like to inform you that the landing visa isn¡¦t applicable for everyone according to some rules.

Tainan, located at the southern part of the island, is Taiwan¡¦s earliest developed city, and has more historic landmarks than any other city in Taiwan. Its abundant historic relics in Taiwan include Chih-Kan Lou, Old Fort of Anping, and Eternal Golden Castle. The following are the most famous landmarks, and they are all available for sightseeing.

The touching movie ¡§Brokeback Mountain¡¨, produced last year, has received lots of appreciation, and not surprisingly, it was also a big winner of the 78th Oscar Academy Award in 2006. Ang Lee, the director, was definitely one of the biggest contributors!
However, being the first Taiwanese to win the honor of Achievement in Directing, Ang Lee has put in lots of efforts. Long before he went to American for further study in directing, he has already participated in several theatre productions. Although, he showed a great talent in directing most of his projects at school, he did have some hard time after graduation. During that period of time, his wife supported him financially because he had no job. While being a full-time ¡§house-husband¡¨, Ang Lee accumulated experiences by watching films and writing drama scripts. Finally, he got a chance to make the movies: ¡§Pushing Hands¡¨ and ¡§The Wedding Banquet¡¨. Both of the movies won many representative awards, the latter one was even nominated for Foreign Language Film in the annual Oscar Academy Award. It is the first time that a Taiwanese film has been nominated, and it is Ang Lee¡¦s first step towards the making of world class movies. He challenged himself with different varieties of film thereafter, and all of them received wonderful commendations.
In year 2000, a Chinese motion movie: ¡§Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon¡¨ caught both audiences¡¦ and film critics¡¦ eyes. In addition, ¡§Brokeback Mountain¡¨, produced last year, moved the world again. Every single time, Ang Lee surprises us with his genius of handling deep emotions and meanings within the movie. Let us look forward to the outstanding works that he will bring us in the future!
